Berlin, Jan 6, IRNA — At least seven homless people have so far frozen to death this winter in Germany, a homeless advocacy group announced Wednesday.
The male victims between the ages of 42 and 62 years, lived in small and mid-sized German towns where there are no sufficient social programs to assist the homeless.
The frozen bodies were discovered on the pavement, abandoned buildings or railway stations.
All victims died reportedly during the second half of December.
Nearly all homeless shelters across Germany are overcrowded as a result of this year’s continuing Siberian freeze.
There are around 132,000 homeless people in Germany, based on statistics released in 2008.
Temperatures in Germany dropped to minus 20 degrees over the past days.
The freezing and snowy weather which has caused major havoc throughout the country, is expected to last through the weekend.
