Kolkata: As per his wishes, Marxist patriarch Jyoti Basu’s eyes were donated to a private eye bank Sunday.
The eyes were removed by doctors of the Susrut Eye Foundation after the Communist icon died at the AMRI hospital here Sunday morning.
“We will conduct a few pathological tests to determine the condition of the cornea and other parts. Then according to a recipient’s list we will zero in on those who can benefit from eye transplant,” said the foundation’s secretary Ratish Chandra Paul, an ophthalmologist.
However, Paul said the name of the recipient/recipients will not be made public as it is prohibited under the Organ Transplant Act.
Basu had pledged to donate his eyes in 2003.
