Lucknow: After much dilly-dallying, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav Sunday accepted the resignation of Amar Singh from the coveted position of party general secretary and other posts he was occupying for years.
The acceptance follows efforts by Mulayam Singh to water down the increasing differences between the two.
In his brief and crisp letter, issued by Mulayam Singh from his constituency Mainpuri, about 250 km from here, Sunday afternoon, the SP supremo wrote: “Since you have cited your health problems as the reason behind your decision to step down, I accept your resignation with a heavy heart from all positions in the party.”
The party chief made it a point to add: “You have made immense efforts for strengthening the party, for which I would always be indebted to you.”
The acceptance was communicated to Amar Singh, who was stated to be in Mumbai.
“The decision to accept the resignation followed a meeting of our party parliamentary party on Friday. All senior leaders of the party were of the view that if the goings-on within the party were harming the interests of the party then it would be in the fitness of things to accept the resignation,” said Uttar Pradesh Samajwadi Party president and Mulayam Singh’s son Akhilesh Yadav in a statement issued in Etawah district.
Akhilesh was in Saifai in connection with the fortnight long ongoing cultural festival that is organized as an annual event by the family.
Amar Singh sent his resignation on Jan 6 from Dubai, where he was holidaying. Since then, a battle of words had been going on between him and Mulayam Singh’s cousin Ram Gopal Yadav, who apart from being another general secretary and Rajya Sabha member, was also widely known as the party’s think-tank.
