No conclusive view on Shunglu report: Congress

By IANS,

New Delhi : Facing an attack over the Shunglu committee report findings, the Congress Friday said there was no conclusive view on the panel report concerning Commonwealth Games irregularities and the committee’s “view” was being evaluated.

“This (the report) is a view that is to be analysed. It is not a court verdict. It was a fact-finding inquiry. It is being evaluated in the light of clarifications,” Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said here.

Replying to a volley of questions on Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s indictment by the panel, he said the government was examining the report.

“Answer is being given to each paragraph in the report. A balanced view will be taken before arriving at a decision,” he said.

Singhvi said the Shunglu Committee has given its view and there was no need for knee-jerk reactions.

“There is no conclusive view on the Shunglu report,” he said.

Asked whether the Congress was not giving a clean chit to those named in the Shunglu report, Singhvi said,” I cannot give you an answer before an answer…. I am not answering in your words.”

He said if the Congress has acted in the past on the issue of corruption, it will also do so in the future. Asked about BJP charges against Dikshit, he said the opposition party should first reply to charges against its governments in Karnataka and Uttarakhand.

“There is a difference between preachers and practitioners. We are practitioners,” he said.

Earlier, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said on the sidelines of Padma awards function that the Shunglu committee report was being analysed by various ministries.

The high level committee headed by former Comptroller and Auditor General V.K. Shunglu, formed after the Games in October last year, has submitted its reports to the prime minister.

The panel had indicted former Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharti B.S. Lalli and Director General (Doordarshan) Aruna Sharma for irregularities in giving broadcasting rights for the Commonwealth Games.
