New Delhi : Former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi said that the proposed Lokpal Bill should aim to instil responsibility rather than foster terror.
“The bill that will hopefully emerge from the labours of the joint committee should be a responsible bill. It should not aim to strike terror. It should be aimed at instilling responsibility,” Gandhi told NDTV channel.
He was reacting to the government agreeing to form a joint committee comprising five ministers and five members of the civil society to draft a Lokpal (ombudsman) Bill.
The government had to accede to the demands of veteran Gandhian Anna Hazare after thousands of people supported his fast-unto-death for a passage of a strong anti-corruption bill.
“The bill has to be one that the country brings in through the mechanism that constitution has put in place, catalysed by the extraordinary movement that Anna Hazare has led,” said Gandhi.
He had termed the end of Hazare’s 97-hour fast Saturday as a “day of rejoicing”.
