Hazare fast over, calm prevails at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi : The barricades were removed, roads were swept clean and the atmosphere was calm and serene at Jantar Mantar here Sunday, a day after reformer Anna Hazare ended his five-day long fast for a rigorous anti-corruption law as the government accepted almost all his demands.Thousands from across the country thronged the 18th century observatory since the agitation began Tuesday. The site was buzzing with activity as students, activists and housewives converged at the site for a glimpse of the 73-year-old Gandhian who was leading a popular mass movement unparalleled in recent history.

However, the road was deserted Sunday and the majority of eateries that did brisk business during the five days were closed.

A handful of policemen stood below a tree which had the last couple of posters reminiscent of Hazare’s agitation. Auto rickshaws were parked at the site where the dais once stood, and the drivers played cards and smoked beedis nearby.

Meanwhile, a group of youngsters who had come to Connaught Place to enjoy their Sunday made a point to visit the site.

“I had seen the protests on news but couldn’t make it as I was out of Delhi. But as I had an off from work today, I came here and also brought along my friends,” said Sandeep Vohra, a 26-year-old interior designer.

“This is a victory of the people of India, but I am not sure of its future. Whether it will be passed by parliament and moreover, will it really be beneficial for us?” said Vohra’s friend Sanya Gurung, a management student.
