Lucknow: After having burnt their fingers in tackling violence in Meerut earlier, the state government on Monday deployed ADG (NCR) Gurbachan Lal to personally monitor the situation after violent clash between two communities on 24th April. Meanwhile, an uneasy calmness prevailed in the city.
Local police claimed to have arrested three persons in regard to the assault on local Imam of a mosque Iqrar Ahmed in Qazipura locality of Meerut on Sunday. The incident sparked instant violence as police detained the Imam. The arrested persons include Sandeep, Chotu and Vijay for attacking the Imam.
As per official reports, nine companies of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and four companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been pressed into service to maintain law and order. SHOs of 18 police stations, six circle officers and over 500 constables from neighbouring districts were also deployed in Meerut.
Nearly two dozen persons were reportedly injured in the violence and over 100 shops and several vehicles were put on fire. The violence also led to stampede in the ongoing Nauchandi Mela in Meerut. One of the injured is Khushi (3) who has been referred to New Delhi and sanctioned an assistance of Rs one lakh from the state government.
