Patna: Siwan has topped districts in Bihar for the third consecutive year in receiving international money orders via Western Union. Between April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011, the post office in Siwan district headquarters received the highest number of 35,600 international money orders via Western Union. On that count, Bihar is at No. 4 in the entire country.
With 18.21% Muslim population (Census 2001), Siwan is known as a district where every second family has sent at least a member abroad – particularly in Gulf countries and Saudi Arabia – to earn.

Not only Siwan, some other districts of Bihar with good population of Muslims are also in top ranks in receiving international money orders via Western Union.
In the same 2010-2011, Gopalganj (17.06% Muslim population) received 24,800 international money orders and got second position in the state while Motihari (19.16%) was at No. 3 with 21,000 international money orders and Darbhanga (22.73%) was at No. 4 with 20,000 international money orders via Western Union. In 2008, Betiah (21.25%) was at No. 1.
However, Patna GPO in the state capital (7.76% Muslim population) has finished at No. 5 in 2010-2011.
