London : British Prime Minister David Cameron announced the recall of parliament for one day Thursday as violence swept across the country, a media report said. Cameron said 16,000 police officers will be deployed in the capital to stop the plunder.
“We will do everything necessary to restore order to Britain’s streets and make them safe for the law-abiding,” the Daily Mail quoted Cameron as saying Tuesday.
“There will be some 16,000 officers tonight (Tuesday). All leave within the Met (Metropolitan Police Department) has been cancelled.”
There will be aid coming from police forces up and down the country, said Cameron, who cut short his Tuscany holiday to deal with the crisis at home.
“I am determined – the government is determined – that justice will be done and these people will see the consequences of their actions,” he said. He warned rioters that they would face the “full force of the law”.
Home Secretary Theresa May caused fury Tuesday by appearing to rule out using the army and water cannons to quell the disorder, after police Monday night failed to contain the violence in many areas, the Mail reported.
