New Delhi : The Delhi Metro’s 3.32-km stretch connecting three different corridors was opened to public Saturday. The new section will reduce travel time and fares for commuters, officials said.

The Kirti Nagar-Ashok Park stretch, an extension of the Green line from Mundka to Inderlok, was made operational at 3 p.m. This section will provide connectivity between Line 1 (Rithala to Dilshad Garden) and Line 3 (Dwarka Sector-21 to Noida City Centre/Vaishali).

Passengers will no longer have to change trains at Kashmere Gate and Rajiv Chowk stations.

With the completion of this stretch, the total Metro network in the National Capital Region will be 190 km.

“The link will cut down the travel fare by more than 50 percent for many commuters. For example, the present fare between Punjabi Bagh and Kirti Nagar is Rs.21, which will come down to Rs.10 after the opening of this link,” the official said.

The travelling time of the commuters using these stretches will also come down by almost 50 percent in many cases.

“Initially 15 trains will run on this line, with a peak hour frequency of about four minutes,” he added.

The Delhi Metro makes over 2,400 trips per day, traversing about 69,000 km and ferrying around 17 lakh passengers on working days.
