Kochi: Hundreds of innocents are languishing in different jails in India and fighting for their release is the way of my life now, said Abdul Kaleem, who prompted Swami Aseemanand to confess his role in the various blasts in the country. Kaleem was speaking at a press conference in Kochi, after attending the anti-terrorism conference organized by the Solidarity Youth Movement.
Kaleem said that Islam never accepts any activity that kills innocent people, and that it was the same thing that he told the investigating officers when they forced him to confess for his alleged role in the Hyderabad Mecca Masjid blasts. When Swami Aseemanand confessed his crimes, feeling guilty, it was not just the Muslim community but the whole country that was saved. The suspicions against each other between the two major religions had affected even the growth of the country. Whether Hindu or Muslim, no religion promotes terrorism. Circumstances create terrorists.
He said that his release from jail was not enough, as there are hundreds of people still languishing in different jails in the country. Such incidents are there in Kerala also. That was how Abdunnasir Maudany, who had been in jail for years for no crime of his, is again behind bars now. Kaleem vowed to be a part, as far as he can, for the attempts to release Maudany from jail.
Though he was a student of medicine when arrested in connection with the Mecca Masjid blast, Kaleem said that he was now studying law to fight for the release of those still in jail (for no crime of their own). Kaleem was arrested in 2007 when he was only 19 years old. Though he was released after 18 months, he could not continue his studies as the police reportedly told the college authorities that he was involved in the blasts. Then he began to study law. He was again arrested alleging that he had passed over a SIM card to his brother when he visited the latter in jail. When he was again arrested, Kaleem’s family was thrown out of the rented house they had been staying in. However, Kaleem has now decided to continue his study of law and fight for the many innocents suffering in jails.
Kaleem was jailed for his alleged role in the 2007 Mecca Masjid blasts. He met RSS leader Swami Aseemanand at the Chanchalguda Jail in Hyderabad. The Swami was an old man and had many difficulties. Kaleem reportedly helped the Swami, though the blasts carried out by the Swami and his associates were the reason for Kaleem to be in jail. Islam asks us to treat all well, and that’s what I did, said Kaleem. And he lived with the Swami for a mere three days only, which brought about the confession. It was not I who changed his mind, but Allah only, Kaleem added.
Leaders of the Solidarity such as Suhail Hashim and KA Faisal, etc also attended the press conference.
