Panaji: A police sub-inspector who was caught in a sting operation comparing ‘bribe money’ to Mahatma Gandhi should be dismissed immediately, former Goa chief minister Dr. Wilfred de Souza said here Wednesday.
De Souza, who was chief minister twice in the last two decades, said it was a shame that the Congress-led coalition government had failed to act against the anti-narcotics cell (ANC) officer Sunil Guddler, who had virtually denigrated the Mahatma.
“How dare he equate Mahatma Gandhi to a bribe? He is the father of the nation. There is video evidence in the sting operation that he equated currency notes received as bribes to Mahatma Gandhi,” Dr. de Souza said at a press conference.
“What is shocking is that the Congress government has taken no action against the officer who has said this. He is still in the police department. This is a national shame,” the former Congressman said.
Guddler was caught selling drugs in a sting operation orchestrated by two Israeli women, one of whom is a sister of Israeli drug dealer David Driham alias Dudu.
Asking for bribes from the duo, Guddler had said that senior officers in the department wanted ‘Gandhi’.
When Dudu’s sister Ayala Driham asked him what he meant, Guddler said that it meant bribes, referring to the watermark of the Mahatma on the Indian currency notes.
Despite the sting operation, which was aired by the local media last week, no strong action has been initiated against the police officer.
