Tunis : The trial of Tunisia’s ousted president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali has been postponed following a request from his lawyers, a media report said.
Ben Ali, along with his daughter Nessrine Ben Ali and son-in-law Sakhr El Materi, was supposed to be on trial in absentia Thursday, Xinhua reported citing state-run TAP news agency.
The trial has been postponed to July 28.
The decision to postpone the trial was taken at the request of the defendants’ lawyers to better prepare the case.
The accused are to be tried for two real-estate corruption cases involving buying of land for 23 Tunisian dinars (about $16) per square metre, a price well below the real value.
The plots were later resold at 1,500 Tunisian dinars ($ 1,100 dollars) per square metre by Ben Ali’s daughter and son-in-law.
Ben Ali was forced to flee to Saudi Arabia along with his wife and three children Jan 14 after an uprising in Tunisia.
