Jayalalithaa lorded over press conference

By IANS,

New Delhi : Wearing a dark magenta sari with sparkling diamond earrings and a flashing smile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa sat imperiously on an elevated arm-chair with lion images as she addressed mediapersons here Tuesday.

With over hundred mediapersons landing up for her first press conference in Delhi after her landslide election victory, the chief minister, shadowed by security personnel, was terse and businesslike and replied everything to the point without losing her cool once.

The 63-year-old actor-turned-politician, who had taken a vow in 1997 not to wear any jewels or make-up, was seen wearing earrings. Her usual streaks of silver hair were carefully concealed and a small red bindi was all the make-up she had.

She was most happy to take questions against her party’s arch-rival DMK as she answered in great detail all questions about its chief M. Karunanidhi and his family.

Her party legislators who accompanied her were seen standing right through the over 20-minute conference. No one else dared to take a seat with her.

Asked about her next visit to Delhi, where she met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, she said: “I will be coming here next month.”

Senior partymen confirmed that Jayalalithaa might come for a Planning Commission meeting scheduled next month.

Apart from other party cadres, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Director General K. Vijay Kumar and former Chennai city police commissioner T. Rajendran escorted her till her car as she left for the airport after her two-day stay.
