Talks with Trinamool not yet over: Pranab

By IANS,

Kolkata : Senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee Wednesday said the seat-sharing talks with the Trinamool Congress for the upcoming West Bengal assembly polls are still on and not yet over.

“I have nothing more to add to what I had said last night. Talks (with Trinamool Congress) are not yet over,” Mukherjee, who is also the union finance minister, told reporters here before leaving for New Delhi.

Mukherjee met Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Tuesday at his residence in south Kolkata but could not reach an agreement on seat-sharing for the April-May elections.

Mukherjee, accompanied by Banerjee and Congress general secretary Shakeel Ahmed, after the 70-minute meeting told reporters that discussions were “inconclusive” and they would meet again.

Earlier during a meeting in New Delhi, the Trinamool agreed to part with 65 seats but the Congress leaders insisted on “quality” seats and demanded it be allotted 90 seats. The West Bengal assembly has 294 seats.

The state goes to elections, staggered over six phases, from April 18 to May 10.
