New Delhi: South Asian countries will continue to be on the United Nations’s agenda for improvement in conditions for disabled people, a UN member said here Wednesday.
“Disabled are still dealt with inclusion and segregation when it comes to jobs, schools, cultural activities and various other walks of life. South Asian countries will continue to be the UN’s focus area for improving the conditions for the disabled in the times to come,” said Kiran Mehra-Kerpelman, director of the UN Information Centre for India and Bhutan.
“Schools and universities have to be more involved in integrating the disabled into the mainstream. The support should be financial also,” Mehra said at ‘We Care film festival’ — an award function on films on disability.
Poonam Natarajan, chairperson of the National Trust for the disabled, said: “There has been a lot of change in the perception towards disability. From being a medical issue, it has moved to become a societal issue.”
