GJM calls 24-hour shutdown in Darjeeling hills

By IANS,

Darjeeling : The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) Wednesday called a 24-hour shutdown in the three hilly sub-divisions of Darjeeling district Thursday to protest the death of a party activist.

Robin Rai, 35, was critically injured Sunday in a clash between Gorkha National Liberation Front(GNLF) and GJM activists in Sonada area. He succumbed to his injuries Wednesday.

“All shops, markets, offices, and commercial and business establishments will be closed,” GJM general secretary Roshan Giri said.

The shutdown will hit Kurseong, Kalimpong and Darjeeling sub-divisions.

“Movement of vehicles will be allowed while tea gardens have been kept outside the purview of the shutdown,” Giri said.

Meanwhile, there was a spontaneous shutdown in Sonada and Kurseong areas after news of Rai’s death spread.

The police have arrested four people in connection with the Sunday clash.
