Kabul : Five civilians were killed when their car ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) in northern Afghanistan’s Kunduz province, police said Sunday.

The car went over an IED on the outskirt of Kunduz city at around 9 p.m. on Saturday, triggering a powerful blast that left all five civilians aboard the vehicle dead, provincial police chief Samiullah Qatra told Xinhua.

He accused Taliban insurgents of targeting civilians.

In a similar incident, six civilians including two women were killed and seven injured when their vehicle ran over a roadside bomb in eastern Paktika province Saturday.

A total of 1,462 Afghan civilians were killed in the first half of 2011, a 15 percent rise over the same period of 2010, according to the UN mid-year report released in Kabul July 14.
