New Delhi: Various Muslim organizations along with some political parties have urged Union Government to take positive action for recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state. A memorandum of the demand has been submitted by a delegation of those groups to Minister of External Affairs Mr. S.M. Krishna.
The organisations have emphasized that establishment of the sovereign state of Palestine consisting West Bank, Gaza Strip and Jerusalem (captured by Israel in 1967) is the only solution to the problem.
The leaders expressed their anxiety that after hundreds of resolutions passed by UN forums, international and regional summits and bilateral agreements between Israel and Palestine Authorities, Israel is still occupying these areas.
They requested the Government of India to use its influence as an emerging economic and political power to gather support for the Palestine cause.
The signatories to the memorandum were Nusrat Ali, Secretary General, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Dr. Zafarul Islam Khan, president, All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawerat, Atul Anjan, Secretary, Communist Party of India, Mufti Mukarram Ahmed, Shahi Imam Masjid Fatehpuri, Mouji Khan, Secretary, All India Milli Council, Dr. S.Q.R. Ilyas, General Secretary Welfare Party of India, Asghar Ali Imam Mehdi, General Secretary Markazi Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith and Abdul Khaliq, Secretary Lok Janshakti Party.
