Myanmar to allow private dailies

By IANS,

Yangon : Myanmar will allow the publication of private daily newspapers staring April 1, 2013, in addition to the state-owned ones, the information ministry announced Friday.

Any language of Myanmar as well as any foreign language will be allowed for such publication, Xinhua quoted the announcement as saying.

An application for such publications can be made to the ministry starting Feb 1.

The publisher, however, has to be a Myanmar citizen or a naturalised Myanmar citizen.

The private publications can be owned by a single person or an organisation.

There are four state-owned newspapers published daily in Myanmar — Myanma Alin (Myanmarese language), Kyemon (The Mirror) (Myanmarese), Myawaddy (Myanmarese) and The New Light of Myanmar (English).
