Bangkok : A 31-year-old Iranian suspect in Tuesday’s Bangkok bombings who managed to board a flight for Malaysia was Wednesday detained after his arrival in Kuala Lumpur, media reports said. Two Iranians have been arrested while a woman suspect is still at large.
Masoud Sedaghatzadeh, who boarded a flight out of Bangkok Tuesday night, was arrested around 3 p.m. in Kuala Lumpur after Thai authorities sent information about him to their Malaysian counterparts, Xinhua reported.
Sedaghatzadeh planned to board a flight from the Malaysian capital to Tehran, officials said.
Police said the four foreigners fled after an explosion Tuesday in a house rented by them in downtown Bangkok.
One of them — identified as Saeid Moradi — threw a bomb at a taxi after the driver refused to take him, injuring the driver and three pedestrians.
When police arrived at the scene, he threw a bomb at them. But it bounced back and blew up in front of him. Moradi lost both his legs in the blast and is being treated in a Bangkok hospital.
Another suspect Mohammad Hazaei was taken into custody at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport while attempting to board a plane to Malaysia. He denied involvement in the explosions.
A fourth suspect, a woman who rented the house, is still at large, Xinhua reported citing Thai newspaper The Nation.
A bomb squad has found and defused at the house two bombs, each made of 1.5 to 2 kg of C-4 explosives.
The arrested men face charges of possession of explosives, attempted murder, attempted murder of a policeman and causing explosions that damaged property, police said.
Thailand’s National Security Council has said possible links to blasts targeting Israeli diplomats in India and Georgia were also being investigated.
Police said the destruction capacity of the explosives was not intended for “large crowds or big buildings”.
Magnets were also found at the house taken on rent by the suspects. The devices used in New Delhi and Georgian capital Tbilisi were attached to vehicles using magnets.
The two attacks took place Monday. An Israeli diplomat was injured in the New Delhi attack, after a motorcycle rider attached an explosive device to the back door of the car.
The US and Britain have issued travel advisories for Thailand.
