New Delhi: Supporting National Minority Commission chief Wajahat Habibullah’s demand for granting scheduled caste status to Muslims and Christian backward classes under article 341, Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind General Secretary Maulana Mahmood Madani asserted need to take effective initiative in this regard.
He said this demand has been part of our resolutions passed in various conferences and meetings. Delegation of Jamiat Ulama whenever met Prime minister and UPA chairperson, demanded that labourer castes of the Muslim community and the backward classes should have been treated at par with other Dalits by amending Article 341 of the Constitution. The facilities extended to the non-Muslims weavers and other professional sects by categorizing them under the schedule caste category should be extended to the Muslim community too, Maulana Madani said.
“By depriving very backward Muslims and Christians of the benefits of reservation the Government of India is violating the Constitution,” Maulana Madani said adding that reservation is the most burning issue of the time and Muslims stand in greatest need of it.
There are many backward classes in the Muslim community who are in the same condition as those of non-Muslim Dalits. Despite being the same condition of the two, the denial of benefit to one particular community is against the spirit of the constitution that must be done away with. He felt disheartened over the fact that this injustice had been meted out against some particular classes for 62 years, that was the main reason Muslims were educationally and socially remained backward and that is enough to demand reservations, said Maulana Madani adding that if such injustice had not been done, they would not have needed any reservation. Maulana Madani while appreciating the move of NCM Chief urged him to take the issue effectively in this direction.
