Thiruvananthapuram : The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) might have reported that Kerala had the highest crime rate in the country but this was not a matter of concern, state Home Minister T. Radhakrishnan said Friday
“This is simply because it’s our culture to see to it that even the smallest crime committed gets registered and hence this tag has come. If one looks into the category of serious crimes committed, which includes atrocities on women, the figure has come down,” Radhakrishnan told reporters after presiding over a meeting of high ranking police officers in the state.
Earlier this month, the NCRB came out with a report on crimes compiled till 2010 which showed that Kerala had a crime rate of 424.1, more than double the national average of 187.6. Madhya Pradesh came second and Delhi third.
NCRB figures showed that of the 241,986 incidents of violent crime in the country, Kerala accounted for 11,756, more than larger states like Rajasthan (10,577).
Crime rate is calculated by examining the number of crimes committed per one lakh population.
The meeting also decided to give police unbridled support and freedom to crack down on the various mafias which operate in the state.
“We have decided to amend the present Goonda Act to make it more tough and importance would be given to see to it that the law and order situation is kept under check,” Radhakrishnan added.
