Bangladesh mulls urbanisation policy

By IANS,

Dhaka : The Bangladeshi government will formulate a National Urbanisation Policy to tackle the influx of rural people into cities for work, a minister has said.

“Most of the people of the country will live in cities within next 40 years. So, there is no alternative without a specific policy,” State Minister for Local Government Jahangir Kabir Nanak told a mayors’ seminar Saturday.

Terming “quick urbanisation” a problem, he said: “Because of the impact of global recession and spiraling commodity prices, development activities are often being botched,” he added.

He said decentralisation of the administration is possible if local government bodies are self-reliant, the bdnews24.com reported.

The seminar was organised by the Bangladesh Municipal Development Fund (BMDF).
