New Delhi : The Delhi traffic police said Sunday that accidents and deaths in the capital were lower in the first quarter of the calendar year compared to the corresponding period last year for the third consecutive year.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg posted the figures recorded from Jan 1 to March 15, 2012, on the force’s Facebook page, which has more than 100,000 followers.
“Seeing data for the period up to March 15 we feel satisfied that hard work does pay, as accidents have come down from 430 last year to 347 this year and deaths on roads down to 359 in 2012 compared to 442 last year up to 15th March,” Garg posted.
“When you notice that decline in accidents and deaths is for third continuous year one feels one can make a difference, however small,” he added.
Garg further said that the decline was uniform across Delhi.
“The decline is not confined to one particular area or one time zone. It is across the board and in all time zone. While some areas have done very well we can make some areas better,” he said.
“Our accidents are down in all time zones which we call morning hours from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m., morning peak from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., lean hours from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., evening peak from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., late evening from 9 p.m. to midnight and night from midnight to 4 a.m.,” he added.
Complementing the southern district for “doing extremely well”, Garg said there was good reduction in accidents in eastern, central and northern range while the western range needed to work a bit more.
Accidents involving commercial vehicles have also come down in the capital from from 163 to 135. The figure involving cars dropped from 64 to 54 and for two wheelers from 33 to 21.
“Let me complement DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation) as well. Accidents this year have come down drastically from 21 to 9 this year,” he said.
