Iran hangs 10 for drug offence

By IANS/AKI,

Tehran : Iran has hanged 10 convicted drug offenders, human rights groups said.

Among those executed in Tehran’s Evin prison Monday was a young shop worker Saeed Sedighi. Amnesty International had earlier appeal to Tehran to halt his execution.

Iran Human Rights called the executions unlawful, saying reports indicated that the prisoners had confessed under torture and were sentenced to death in sham trials — each one lasting less than 30 minutes.

The hangings were initially due to take place Oct 11 but were postponed due to international outrage.

“We urge the international community to condemn the executions and act to stop future executions,” IHR spokesman Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam said.
