Putin peak summitted for first time

By IANS/RIA Novosti,

Bishkek : The Putin peak, a mountain in Kyrgyzstan named in honour of the Russian president, has been summited for the first time, an official said Friday.

The 14,583-foot high peak in the Tian Shan range took 19 hours to summit, said Vladimir Bogolyubov, head of Kyrgyzstan’s Climbing Federation.

The previously unnamed mountain was dubbed Putin peak by a decree of the Kyrgyz president in March 2011.

The summiteers – a group of Russian and Kyrgyz climbers – made it to the top by a route rated as “fairly difficult”, Bogolyubov said.

They planted the national flags of Russia and Kyrgyzstan at the summit.

Putin peak is, however, dwarfed by other mountains in the Kyrgyz portion of the Tian Shan range, including Victory peak (24,406 feet) and Khan Tengri (23,000 feet).
