By IANS,

Lucknow : Workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) took to the streets across the Uttar Pradesh Friday to protest the diesel price hike.

Raising anti-Congress slogans, protestors blocked traffic and burnt effigies.

Demanding a rollback on the diesel price hike, the BSP state unit said it would oppose the hike at the national and state levels.

While protesting outside the Vidhan Sabha, traders raised slogans demanding that the ruling SP withdraw its support to the union government.

The SP came out in full support of the protests and its workers disrupted rail traffic in Bulandshahr and Varanasi. Similar protests were reported from Allahabad, Kanpur, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Meerut and Agra.

Former chief minister and BSP president Mayawati slammed the price hike and called for a rollback.
