Lucknow : More than a dozen people were injured outside the Vidhan Sabha building here Wednesday when police baton-charged a protest rally of ‘gram pradhans’ (village heads), who were blocking traffic to press for their demands.
The protesters were demanding that their powers in the ‘Gram Shiksha Samiti’ be restored and they be given pension on the lines of MLAs and MPs.
When no one from the state government came forward to meet them on their 40-point charter of demands, the crowd got restive and went on a rampage, blocking roads and breaking window panes of parked vehicles. When all efforts to stop them failed, the district officials ordered a lathi charge to disperse them.
