Delhi’s Chandni Chowk to be redeveloped

By IANS,

New Delhi : Dangling power cables, narrow and congested streets and alleys which have marred the skyline of the capital’s heritage Chandni Chowk, may not be seen any longer as the Delhi government has decided to redevelop the Walled City.

This was decided at a meeting Monday between Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and union Communication Minister Kapil Sibal, who is a Lok sabha member from Chandni Chowk.

“The project includes various features like street improvement and creating a pedestrian-friendly environment with an integrated plan for all services and creating a heritage environment in Chandini Chowk,” said a government official.

It was decided that the power lines would run underground. The lines of Delhi Jal Board are already underground.

“The power department – including power companies, Mahanagar Telecom Nagar Ltd. and Indraprastha Gas Limited – have been directed to get their lines underground in consultation with the Public Works Department and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation,” the official added.
