Ghaziabad : The in-laws of a woman from Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr town, whose husband was shot dead for marrying her against her family’s wishes, tried to set themselves afire to protest police apathy.
Mahabish and her husband Mohammad Hakim had appeared on “Satyamev Jayte”, a television program highlighting social issues hosted by Bollywood actor Aamir Khan.
Hakim was shot dead on the Grand Trunk Road in November last year. A first information report (FIR) was filed by the family members naming five people for their involvement in Hakim’s murder.
Mahabish said that Inspector R.B. Singh Yadav came to her house Wednesday and mistreated her in-laws by accusing them of filing a false police complaint.
According to Mahabish, her brother-in-law, Mohammad Unus, told Yadav that if police do not heed them, they have no other option but to commit suicide. Upon this, the inspector gave him a match box. Unus took the match box and set himself on fire.
Unus’ brother Shahnawaz, too, attempted a suicide but was stopped by other policemen present there, Mahabish alleged.
Unus has been referred to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital in Delhi with 98 percent burns. His condition is stated to be critical.
