Chennai : The protests in Tamil Nadu against the alleged atrocities committed on the Sri Lankan Tamils continued Wednesday as an anti-Colombo resolution is slated to be come up for discussion at the UN rights panel.
A vote is coming up Thursday at the 47-member United Nation Human Rights Council (UNHRC) pulling up Sri Lanka for military excesses during the final stages of the war that vanquished the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Students from various city colleges gathered in large numbers at the Marina beach of Channai and shouted slogans demanding imposition of economic sanctions against Sri Lanka and that India should support the anti-Sri Lanka resolution in the UNHRC.
Police prevented a large number of lawyers in various courts here from marching towards Raj Bhavan. The lawyers sat on the road and shouted slogans against Sri Lanka.
Residents in several localities of Chennai staged protests and went on hunger-strike to express support for the Lankan Tamils.
In Madurai, students and lawyers took out a procession expressing solidarity with Lankan Tamils while activists staged protests outside central government undertakings like Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL).
In Coimbatore, students of various colleges staged protests against the Lankan government while in Tuticorin members of Thoothukudi Press and media associations demanded economic sanctions against Lanka.
According to reports reaching here, Lankan refugees at various camps in the state went on hunger strike calling for India’s support to the Tamils in the island nation.
