New Delhi: A Delhi Police sub-inspector was arrested for firing on a Crime Branch team when they tried to arrest him following an extortion complaint, police said Thursday.
Nagender, working with the special staff of Delhi Police, was arrested Wednesday night from south Delhi’s Nehru Place after a coaching centre owner lodged the extortion complaint.
“Nagender fled after opening fire on the Delhi Police’s Crime Branch team when they tried to catch him, but he was later arrested,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch)Ravindra Kumar.
According to the officer, the sub-inspector along with head constable Amit and constable Kaushal Monday arrived at Sanjay Kumar Thakur’s coaching centre in Delhi’s Jaitpur area.
“Introducing themselves as Crime Branch officials, they threatened Thakur and asked him to give Rs.5 lakh since he was illegally printing e-tickets,” Ravindra Kumar said.
“They took Thakur to the Nehru Place police post in their car and called his father to meet their demand and secure the release of his son. Thakur was released after they succeeded in extorting Rs.1.5 lakh,” said the officer.
Thakur registered the complaint with the Crime Branch Wednesday, after which an investigation was taken up, the officer added.
Police officials said they were yet to arrest Amit and Kaushal who are on the run.
