Founder of the Bhim Army advocate Chandrashekhar Azad ‘Ravan’ was arrested today from Dalhousie town of Himachal Pradesh by Special Task Force of UP police.
According to sources, the STF team arrived in plain clothes to arrest Chandrashekhar from Subhash Chowk in Dalhousie when he was roaming around. Police personnel arrived in a Toyota Innova and took away Chandrashekhar. Dalhousie DSP Sagar Chand confirmed the arrest.
The UP Police had been trying to locate Chandrashekhar for the past one month but had not been successful. Earlier it was speculated that Chandrashekhar could be hidden in remote areas of Punjab, but there was no credible intelligence to support the same.
Chandrashekhar Azad ‘Ravan’ went absconding about a month ago when the UP Police implicated him in the Saharanpur riots. While no tough action was taken against BJP leaders and Thakurs who were directly involved in the case, UP Police found it easy to frame Chandrashekhar in incident where Dalit houses were burnt.
To trace and catch Chandrashekhar, Saharanpur was turned into a surveillance state where family members of Chandrashekhar were being detained and abducted without any charges. Moreover, the family members of Chandrashekhar also alleged that they were being followed by police personnel in plain clothes.
With the arrest of Chandrashekhar, it is speculated that violence may again spike in Saharanpur and as a preventive measure, Police is again thinking to put blockade over internet.
Days before the arrest, Chandrashekhar issued audio tapes and video recording from various unknown locations. In an interview given to PTI, Chandrashekhar had said, “Instead of arresting the real culprits of the Saharanpur violence, the police has arrested innocent people and put them behind bars. This has resulted in growing anger among the Dalits.”
