West Bengal Higher Secondary results declared; five Muslim students feature in Top 20 ranks

Five Muslim students secured ranks in the Top 20 in the recent West Bengal Higher Secondary results for 2017 published on Tuesday, with two students making it to the Top 10.

Naurin Hossain of Contai Hindu Girls’ School in Purba Medinipur district stood 8th position in the exam. She was also among the toppers in Madhyamik examination in 2015.

Hossain scored 482 marks out of 500, a percentage of 96.4%. She also stood 14th in the Madhyamik examination in 2015. “A clear cut concept and understanding of a particular topic should be the priority. It helps secure good marks”, she suggested when asked about her study process.

Chhanda Sasmal, the headmistress of the school, when was asked about the success of her student, said, “It’s an immense pleasure that Naurin ranked 8th in the state. We were a little disappointed as our students missed the top 10 list by a small margin, but nevertheless it is an encouraging performance and we would like to improve next year.” Commenting on Hossain, she said, “She is very hard working and a brilliant student from the beginning. She stood first in all classes from class five to Higher Secondary.”

Hossain scored 92 in Bengali, 98 in English, 92 in Physics, 96 in Chemistry, 96 in Biology, and 100 in Mathematics. Following in her father’s footsteps, she also wants be to a doctor.

Kazi Dilruba Khanam, a student of Murliganj High School from Al Ameen Mission, Siliguri branch, ranked 10th with a total of 480 out of 500. She had also secured the 3rd rank in the state in the high Madrassa examination in 2015.

Md. Sinan Hammam Mia of Hasaran village in Murshidabad secured 11th position with 479 marks. He got 98 in Bengali and Biology, 96 in Physics, 95 in Chemistry, 92 in English and Mathematics.

Afrin Sultana, a student of Al Ameen Mission, Khalatpur branch, stood 14th in the top 20 lists. She scored 476 out of 500, with scores of 97 in Bengali, 95 in English, 86 in Physics, 87 in Chemistry, 98 in Biology and 99 in Mathematics. “The whole credit for my success goes to Al Ameen Mission because I did not do well in Madhyamik and after coming to the Mission I started to think big, and was motivated aby the school authorities and my teachers,” Sultana said. She added that she wants to be a doctor.

Anish Ahamed of Khalatpur branch, Al Ameen Mission and a resident of Mirikpur village in Purba Medinipur, scored 473 securing 17th position in the top 20 lists.  His father is a tailor who has to maintain his four members’ family. He scored 90 in Bengali, 81 in English, 96 in Physics, 91 in Chemistry, 99 in Biology, 97 in Mathematics.

Anish said, “I am not satisfied with the rank as well as the total. I expected 485 and see myself within the top 10”. He added, “It is thanks to Al Ameen Mission that I can imagine having a bright future.” His ambition is to be an IIT-ian and study Computer Science and Engineering.

A total of 7,56,620 students appeared for the exams and the pass percentage is 84.20% as reported by Anandabazar Patrika. The pass rate among male students is 85.15% and 83.26% for female students. The pass rate among minority students is 79.15.

While the results of minority students is higher than previous years; there is no remarkable improvement of minority students in securing top ranks. It is also important to point out that the results of top Muslim students come mostly from Al Ameen Mission students, and the list includes only only one student from a government school.
