People stranded in Himachal’s cold desert safe: Chief minister

By IANS,

Shimla : Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal Monday said all the people trapped in the cold desert of the state “are safe and will be rescued in a few days”.

“Essential commodities like medicines, food and blankets have been air-dropped in Sarchu and Chattru areas of Lahaul valley by the Indian Air Force,” Dhumal told reporters here.

Official sources said about 400 people were stuck at various locations along the 475-km-long Manali-Leh highway due to landslides.

Dhumal said the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and the state public works department were working round the clock to open the road through Baralacha pass to Sarchu so that the people could be evacuated.

“A military camp has been providing medical and other facilities near Sarchu to the stranded passengers,” he said.

Dhumal said Baralacha pass, which is located at a height of 4,883 metres, would be opened for traffic within a day.
