Pakistani president to attend UN session

Islamabad : Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari will participate in a high-level session of United Nations General Assembly on “Culture of Peace” in New York on Nov. 12-13, Pakistan’s Foreign Office said on Monday.

“Pakistan fully supports the initiative of Saudi King Abdullah for interfaith and inter-cultural dialogue to promote peace, understanding, and tolerance among human beings, as well as respect for all their diverse religious, cultural and linguistic identities,” a Foreign Office statement said.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi will also accompany Zardari during the session. Pakistan has always supported the efforts to promote global peace and harmony among peoples of diverse faith and culture, official Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported.

Zardari will also hold bilateral meetings with the heads of states who will attend the high-level session, said the report.

Around thirty world leaders including King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, United States President George W. Bush will attend the interfaith conference at UN Headquarters, according to APP.

The UN interfaith conference, the first of its kind, is being held at the initiative of King Abdullah and on the recommendations of the conference that was held in Madrid in July.
