According to the Delhi electoral office, the number could go up.

“This is the tentative list received till 10 p.m. and the final list with a few more names and a proper division of district-wise nominations is expected later,” said an election official.

The nomination process in Delhi started Nov 5. While scrutiny of nominations will take place Wednesday, the last day for withdrawing nominations is Friday.

While the first day did not see any nominations, the last day saw over 600 aspirants filing their nominations from across the capital.

“Till Monday evening, we had 498 nominations but today we received over 600 nominations. Final lists are coming from all the returning officers,” the official said.

During the last assembly elections five years back, 1,006 candidates had filed their nominations of whom 136 withdrew their names and 51 nomination papers were rejected.

Among those who filed their nominations Tuesday were the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Vijay Jolly from the New Delhi constituency and Ram Babu Sharma, the former president of the Delhi Congress, from Rohtas Nagar.

The BJP has pitted Jolly against Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit (Congress). Similarly, the Congress has pitted Jitendra Kochchar against BJP’s chief ministerial hopeful V.K. Malhotra from Greater Kailash.

Retired top police official Amod Kumar Kanth (Congress) has filed his nomination from Sangam Vihar.

There are 10.7 million eligible voters to choose 70 legislators. The results will be declared Dec 8.
