Srinagar : A soldier and two suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba militants were killed Tuesday evening in a gun battle in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district.
Another soldier was killed in a separate incident along the Line of Control.
Police said troops of 21 Rashtriya Rifles and local police in a joint operation killed the two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) guerrillas at Maidan Chowgal village, 85 km from here, in Kupwara Tuesday evening.
"Security forces surrounded a house in Maidan Chowgal in the morning on specific information that a group of LeT militants were hiding there. When security forces tried to enter the house, they came under heavy fire resulting in the spot death of a soldier," a police official said.
"The shootout with the hiding militants continued for several hours. Their bodies were recovered from the debris this evening."
In another incident, security forces intercepted a group of infiltrators trying to sneak into the Indian side along the Kumkari Gulab Post on the LoC (Line of Control) at Haihama in the same district.
"The militants opened heavy fire at the security forces which was returned. In the ensuing heavy gunfight one army trooper was killed and three others were wounded. The operation is still continuing," the spokesman said.
