Kolkata: Three policemen suffered minor injuries as students belonging to the Students Federation of India (SFI) and Pragatisheel Indira Congress (PIC) clashed in a north Kolkata college over distribution of admission forms Wednesday, officials said.
Deputy Commissioner (Detective Department) Javed Shamim said five students were arrested for the violence.
Another police official said the two unions had clashed Tuesday over the distribution of forms for admission to higher secondary courses, following which the PIC called a strike Wednesday.
As the SFI members continued to distribute forms Wednesday, clashes ensued between the two unions and some students sustained minor injuries, the source said.
“The police had to chase the clashing students with batons to bring the situation under control,” Shamim said.
