Chhattisgarh steps up highway patrolling

By IANS,

Raipur : Highway patrolling was intensified Friday in Chhattisgarh’s restive Bastar region, a day after armed Maoists set five trucks on fire on the national highway in Bijapur district.

Patrolling has been stepped up in Bastar region – mainly on National Highway 221 in Dantewada district and National Highway 16 in Bijapur district – to instill faith among truckers fearing attacks by insurgents in the wake of Thursday’s incident, T.J. Longkumer, inspector general, Bastar region, told IANS.

Patrolling was intensified after about 50-60 armed Maoists laid siege on national highway 16 in Bijapur district and set five trucks on fire.

Bastar region comprises the five districts of Dantewada, Bijapur, Narayanpur, Kanker and Bastar and is considered Maoist hotbed.
