Raipur: A 36-year-old man has been arrested for cheating people by posing as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer in a Chhattisgarh town and extracting money to pay off his debts, police said Saturday.
Anurag Jaiswal was arrested Friday night in Bilaspur after he held a press conference.
“We picked up Jaiswal from Hotel Sagar in Bilaspur. He held a press conference at the hotel Friday evening and said he was highly concerned about the rising poverty graph in Chhattisgarh,” Bilaspur crime branch official Prabhakar Tiwari told IANS.
Tiwari said Jaiswal was posing as an IAS officer of the 2001 batch of the Karnataka cadre.
The arrest was made after Bilaspur Superintendent of Police Vivekanand doubted Jaiswal’s claims and went through the list of 2001 batch IAS officers on the internet. He found that Jaiswal did not figure in the list.
Jaiswal was arrested under Section 419 of the IPC (punishment for cheating by impersonation) and Section 170 of IPC (posing as a public servant).
“Jaiswal told police that he was posing as an IAS officer for the past one year to pay off his debts and lead a luxurious life,” a police officer said.
The officer said false I-cards showing Jaiswal holding high posts were recovered from his suitcase.
Rs.200,000 was also found. “Jaiswal told police he got the money from a businessman of Raigarh district in exchange for (promising to clear) work pending with a government department,” the officer said.
