Santiniketan (West Bengal) : A UNESCO representative Wednesday visited Visva-Bharati University here founded by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore to assess whether it could be listed as a world heritage site.
Head of International Council for Monuments and Sites (ICMOS) Kai Wisa’s two-day long visit was scheduled in response to the union cultural ministry’s appeal before UNESCO to enlist Santiniketan as well as Visva-Bharati in world heritage list on occasion of Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary, said Visva-Bharati officials.
The spokesperson of the university, Amitava Chowdhury said: “Wisa visited different places like Upasana Griha, Patha Bhavan, Sangeet Bhavan and other places of Santiniketan. The director of monuments Jahnabi Sharma and other officials from Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) were also present with Wasi.”
“The members of the visiting team will visit other places in Santiniketan and Sriniketan Thursday. After visiting the entire university complex, Wasi and other members will hold a meeting with the cultural ministry and submit the report before UNESCO,” the spokesperson said.
He also said that Wisa met all the heads of different Bhavans (departments) and enquired about their functioning.
“Later in the day, he (Wisa) convened a meeting with Vice-Chancellor Rajat Kanta Ray regarding different sculptures and monuments in Santiniketan. Visva-Bharati authority has also submitted a report containing detailed information and historical facts of different buildings before the members,” said Chowdhury.
