‘Probe blood wastage by Himachal medical college’

By IANS,

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh medical college where student Aman Kachru was allegedly ragged to death is in a controversy again with a Shimla-based NGO alleging the hospital had destroyed 75 units of blood in the past couple of months.

In a letter to Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, Umang Foundation, a voluntary organisation promoting blood donation, has demanded a probe into “wastage of blood in the hospital”.

“We are deeply moved by the act of the Rajendra Prasad Medical College (at Tanda in Kangra district). Wasting a single drop of life-saving blood is a crime against humanity,” NGO’s chairman Ajai Srivastava said.

He said it was sad that on the one hand, the patients have to run from pillar to post to get blood in emergency, and, on the other, so many blood units were downed in a drain.

“It reflects insensitivity towards humanity and a callous attitude of the authorities concerned to check the problem,” he added.

Umang Foundation has donated 700 blood units in 2009 and 675 units this year so far through blood donation camps.
