New Delhi : Expressing serious concern over the developments in Libya, India deplored the use of force on anti-government protesters by the authorities, leading to loss of numerous lives.
“The Government of India has been following, with serious concern, the developments in Libya, leading to loss of numerous lives and injuries to many more,” said the statement issued here Wednesday by the External Affairs Ministry. India deplores the use of force which is totally unacceptable and must not be resorted to. It is earnestly hoped that calm is restored at the earliest without any further violence, it added.
The ministry and the Embassy of India in Tripoli are closely monitoring the situation and are in regular touch with representatives of the Indian community. Necessary measures, as warranted by the situation, would be taken by the government to ensure the safety and welfare of Indian nationals, the statement said.
Meanwhile, Indian lawmakers on Tuesday voiced concern in Parliament over the volatile situation in Arab world and some African countries.

Earlier, India’s External Affairs Minister, S M Krishna on Tuesday said that the government is keeping a close watch on the situation in violence-hit Libya where all Indians are safe.
‘The situation is being closely-monitored by the External Affairs Ministry and we are in constant touch with the ambassador there. I am happy to inform that all Indians are safe in Libya,’ Krishna told reporters outside Parliament.
