Probe into police attack on Pakistan newspaper

Islamabad : Senior officials have been directed to probe the police attack on a Peshawar based Urdu newspaper, a minister said.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan Tuesday condemned the attack, reported Associated Press of Pakistan.

The incident took place Saturday afternoon when some police personnel arrived at the office of Daily Mashriq, a Urdu newspaper of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and beat two of its security guards who tried to stop them from entering the premises.

There had been shootout reports and the police believed the culprits were hiding in the office. The police personnel then manhandled three reporters who confronted them for beating the security guards.

Speaking in the National Assembly, Awan said the government believed in freedom of expression.

She the police arrested the security guard of the newspaper and took him to a police station. The security guard was later released when the journalists staged a protest and blocked the G.T. Road.

The minister said that the inspector general of police and other officials have been directed to probe the issue and submit a detailed report.
