Kozhikode: Central Minister E Ahamed may have to step down as the national president of the Indian Union Muslim League due to the interference of the Election Commission. Mr Ahamed has been elected to the parliament under a party registered as Muslim League Kerala State Committee (MLKSC) in the Election Commission, while at the same time he contested elections on the banner and symbol of the Muslim League.

E Ahamed and ET Muhammed Basheer are reportedly members of the MLKSC as per the Lok Sabha records. The Commission took the action reportedly on the complaint filed by MG Dawud Mian Khan and others of the Tamil Nadu unit of the Muslim League. The Commission did not accept Ahmed’s explanation that the MLKSC should be seen as a part of the IUML. Instead it acknowledged the argument of the complainants that the MLKSC and the IUML are two distinct parties. The Commission has also reportedly accepted the complainants’ argument that KM Qader Moideen of Tamil Nadu had no rights to claim the leadership of the IUML since he had contested on DMK (Dravida munnetra Kazhakam) ticket.
Rule has it that a member of an authorized party should not be the member of another registered one. Hence, a person cannot claim to have membership in two parties at a time, the Commission reportedly clarified. E Ahamed had, in July this year, reportedly asked for three months’ time to explain his part in the matter and since that time period has ended, now Ahamed may have to step down from the post. The matter is significant since there is reportedly a strong lobby that wants Ahamed to step down.
Meanwhile, reports also suggest that the IUML is trying to solve the problem by merging the MLKSC in the Muslim League.
The issue of the MLKSC and the IUML use to come up during every election time, brought forward by the opponents of the Muslim League. However, it is now only that the matter has acquired this much significance with the possibility of the national president of the IUML having to resign his post.
