New Delhi : Four members of a family died due to asphyxiation as a fire broke out in their south Delhi residence early Monday, officials said.

According to fire brigade officials, the fire broke out around 1 a.m. on the second floor of a house at Dakshinpuri.

Two fire fighters were rushed to the scene immediately but could not save lives of Prem Niwas, 32, his wife Usha, 30, their daughter Tannu, 11, and 10-year-old son Honda, who were sleeping on the third floor.

The victims were taken to the Safdarjung Hospital where doctors declared them dead.

Police officials investigating the matter said there was no electricity connection in the house due to non-payment of bills and the family had guests staying on the second floor.

“The guests left the candles lit before going to bed. Their mistake resulted in the fire,” said Subash Tandon, in-charge of the Ambedkar Nagar police station.

Prem’s father and mother, who were on the first floor, and his elder brother’s family on the ground floor, escaped unhurt as the fire was tamed before it could spread to other floors.
