Musharraf’s supporters heading to election defeat: TV

Islamabad : Supporters of President Pervez Musharraf are seemed to be heading to defeat in eastern Punjab province, earlier considered to be stronghold of Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Q), the votes counted so far suggested late Monday.

Candidates of Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N), led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif are ahead of the PML-Q and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in the province.

PPP is showing good results in interior southern Sindh province, according to vote counting. The pro-Musharraf party is seen behind from rival candidates.

The Mutahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) is set to win most of the seats in Karachi, the capital of Sindh province, the unofficial results indicate.

MQM was the coalition partner in Musharraf’s government.

In North West Frontier Province (NWFP), the nationalist Awami National Party is heading to victory on majority seats, while the PML-N and PPP are also likely to secure several seats.

The PML-Q is also in trouble in NWFP
In southwestern Balochistan, the alliance of Islamic groups, Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal and nationalist groups and the PML-Q may also secure more seats.

In the capital Islamabad, candidates of PML-N on both seats are ahead of their rival candidates of the PML-Q and PPP, accounting the votes counted so far.

Punjab, which was ruled for five years by the pro-Musharraf PML-Q, is giving different results as were expected.

Initial unofficial results show that most candidates of Sharif’s PML-N are heading to win their seats.

Punjab has 148 general National Assembly seats in the 342-house.

Punjab has the major role in forming the governments in the country’s 60-year history, as seats numbers in the province are more even than the three provinces, capital Islamabad and federally administered tribal areas.

According to the break-up Islamabad has 2 National Assembly seats, Balochistan 14, tribal regions 12, NWFP 35 and Sindh 61.
