Kuala Lumpur : An 89-year-old woman has made headlines after she filed nomination papers to contest the parliamentary seat of Kuala Terengganu in northern Malaysia.
Maimun Yusof, great-grandmother of 19 and perhaps the oldest candidate in the country’s electoral history, has been seen on her bicycle in Kuala Terengganu, capital of the Terengganu state, to meet voters and canvass for support.
Yusof, a cloth trader who has spent her whole life at her village in Kuala Terengganu, has prepared campaign posters herself and although a newcomer to the political scene has challenged political heavyweights in the constituency.
Maimun, who is confident of her win, has spent 10,000 ringgit ($3,000) to register as a candidate.
